Apartment hunting in Nairobi

Lavington reminds me unaccountably of Surrey,
England. Its the leaves and flowers
(lovely) and
sense of complacency and
bijou-knick-knacks-shopping-mall
(less lovely).

.

Coastweek -- Im looking for an apartment for four months with my friend Jane while we work on our projects. So I get to do the thing I love most, nose around other peoples houses.

So many people have offered suggestions.

Before I even arrived in Nairobi, friends were telling me:

"Oh try here, my compound might have something going" or "I know so-and-so who has a place, Ill put you in touch".

It has bought home to me just how helpful Kenya society is.

I can tell you its a blessing after London - which I love to pieces - but which has become so big, bureaucratised, and professionalised that youre always dealing with strangers.

I visit places in Westlands and Lavington.

Lavington reminds me unaccountably of Surrey, England. Its the leaves and flowers (lovely) and sense of complacency and bijou-knick-knacks-shopping-mall (less lovely).

.

Coastweek -- [Clockwise from top] Luxury living: actually the decor appears distinctly blue, the road home, potted plants on the terrace and shopping in the Lavington supermarket.

.

Its boom time in Nairobi. I see lots of apartment blocks, and many of them are full.

And the prices, the prices!

How much for this apartment in Lavington, how much??

Is everyone living here on the NGO dollar? I guess so.

In the end I plump for Westlands.

I just love the vibe here.

Our apartment has parquet floors and a lovely little veranda.

Were near our friends and were near the gym.

Its perfect. Today is the day that I finalise the deal.

Coastweek -- Westlands: I love the vibe here.

.I cant wait. I know me and my friend will be very happy here.

We might even get some work done.

Really, apart from 'serious' work I have also been doing some research.

Here are two 'links' I thought many of you might appreciate:

This is the soundtrack of African music chosen by the Economists Africa correspondent J.M. Ledgard

This is new digital collection from the Brooklyn Museum
