REMEMBER: RESTARTING YOUR COM-
PUTER CLEARS OUT YOUR R.A.M. ?

COASTWEEK - - This week we continue the windows tips which I am sure have been interesting and educative, writes VIPUL PATEL.

moving multiple files or folders - hold down the ctrl key and left-click each item you want moved ... then right-click and choose cut ... open the folder you want to place it in ... then right-click and paste.

networking - when sharing a computer the "Workgroup" must be identical ... go to Start + Settings + Control Panel and from the menu that appears double-click the Network icon ... click the Identification tab and make sure all computers use the same Workgroup.

new boot route - to boot your system directly to an MS-DOS command prompt, instead of using the F8 like you did in Win95 use the ctrl key after the keyboard test...you can still use the F8 key if you want to.

new file or folder - right-click where you'd like the new file or folder ... choose new & click Folder or Text Document ... use the backspace key then name the file or folder and hit enter or just left-click it.

Online Services - if you don't use any of them you can go to add/remove in control panel click Windows Setup and uncheck the Online Services box ... then click Apply button ... this will save you some disk space.

Open With - to open an associated file with a different program hold SHIFT and right-click the file ... click Open With ... under Choose the program you want to use click the program you want to use and then click OK ... if you don"t want all files of this type to be associated with this program clear the check box Always use this program to open this type of file.

passwords - to change your Password go to Start + Settings + Control Panel ... from the menu that appears double-click the Password icon.

Power Management - in control panel Power Manage-ment gives you that choice how you can power down.

quick access to your drives - for quicker access to your drives, create a Drives folder on the Start menu.

recycle bin - you can change the amount of space used for deleted files or have the files you delete bypass the recycle bin altogether by right-clicking the recycle bin icon on your desktop and clicking properties.

remove start-up items - some software programs run automatically at start-up without appearing in the taskbar ... to troubleshoot this sort of problem use the Windows 98 System Configuration Utility to shut down all automatically starting programs ... if that solves the problem start adding programs back one at a time until you find the guilty party ... remember uncheck everything except "ScanRegistry" and "System-Tray" ... these must remain checked.

reorganize your Start Menu - you can perma-nently move any item on your Start menu (with the exception of a few items such as the Documents or Programs menu labels) simply by dragging and dropping the item to the new Start menu location of your choice.

restarting computer - when you install software on your computer or change settings you should restart your computer ... restarting your computer clears out the current contents of your RAM (Random Access Memory) and starts up Windows again.

run command - here's some common programs you can execute just by typing their name in the "Run ... " Window's text box ... defrag - Defragmenter ... msconfig - Windows Configu-ration Utility ... ping ERROR [Basic syntax error] in: <cERROR [Basic syntax error] in:omputer address or IP Address> - Ping Utility ... regedit - the registry editor ... scandisk - Windows Scandisk Utility ... telnet - Telnet Utility ... tracert ERROR [Basic syntax error] in: <cERROR [Basic syntax error] in: computer address or IP Address> - Trace Route Utility.

Have a fast and enjoyable Window session this weekend  !
