HELP SAVE KWALE FOREST

Forest Restoration Project

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Kwale, in close collaboration with its
key partners, is implementing a forest conservation and management
project in Kwale District known as the Landscape Forest Restoration
Project.
The
project aims at improving conservation and governance of the coastal
forests in Kwale.
The
main objective being to ensure that the Coastal forests of Kenya are
conserved, managed and sustainably utilized through a participatory
system that optimizes benefits for present and future generations at
landscape scales.
The
project will target the key forest sites in Kwale District such as
the Shimba Hills bio diversity eco system (including the Mwaluganje
Elephant Reserve), Traditional Kaya Forests and the Buda Complex.
The
Buda Complex is a group of six Gazetted Forest Reserves found in the
southern area of the Kwale District.
These
include the Gongoni forest, Buda forest, Marenje forest, Mrima
forest, Dzombo and Gonja forests. Planned activities for the project
are to include:
•
Improvement of community livelihoods,
•
Support for forestry law enforcement,
•
Farm forests development,
•
Restoration of key degraded sites, and
•
Gazettment of the remaining Kayas as National Monuments for
effective management.
