Republic of Korea warship rescues merchant vessel in distress

Republic of Korean navy rescues merchant vessel in distresss | Coastweek

Combined Maritime Forces -- Republic of Korean Navy warship ROKS Dae Jo Yeong, working for Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, has conducted a safety of life at sea (SOLAS) operation for the second time in a week. When United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) informed the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) Headquarters in Bahrain that a Yemeni flagged merchant vessel named MV Asad Addin had been drifting for three days due to a damaged fuel tank. CTF 151 immediately tasked the closest unit to the area, ROKS Dae Jo Yeong, to conduct SOLAS operation. While conducting operations in the Gulf of Aden, ROKS Dae Jo Yeong proceeded to the merchant vessel with best speed and launched two Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) from the ship to immediately conduct a safety check of the crew and vessel. There were 32 crew and 37 passengers onboard, 5 of which were sick for several reasons, including bone fractures and pneumonia. They were immediately provided medical assistance, water, and fresh food by the medical team and crew of ROKS Dae Jo Yeong. This particular incident shows how close cooperation and effecient communication between partner nations within CMF can lead to a positive outcome of what was a perilous and potentially fatal incident. Immediately tasked by CTF 151, TCG Giresun quickly sent a medical team by her SH-70 Seahawk helicopter [right] to render assistance. Once the helicopter arrived, the injured sailor was hoisted to the Seahawk and the doctor of the medical team carefully examined and provided immediate medical treatment. The individual was subsequently moved to TCG Giresun and later underwent successful surgery at a hospital in nearby Oman.  PHOTOS CMF
