Two people killed as Kenyan security
forces clash with al-Shabab suspects

MANDERA (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and unknown number injured in clashes between Kenyan security forces and Somali militants in the northeastern county of Mandera on Monday night, officials said Tuesday.

North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamed Birik confirmed the clashes, saying one al-Shabab suspect and one National Police Reservist were killed in Dawaduba, Fino in Mandera County.

Birik said the security operation was aimed at flushing out the gunmen from their hideout within Kenya, adding that it is believed that many other al-Shabab fighters escaped with bullet wounds and that the operation is ongoing.

According to local authorities, the gunmen had crossed the border and camped inside Kenya to carry out terror attacks on unspecified locations, but the security forces received intelligence of their presence and moved there.

The fighting went into Monday midnight amid fears of more casualties.

Local security said the operation is underway in the area which has experienced a lull of attacks since the beginning of Ramadan due to a heavy security presence.

Fino is about 6km from the main Kenya-Somalia border.

The area has faced a number of attacks from the militants who targeted communication masts, several of which have been destroyed in a bid to cut police off from an immediate response.

Two al-Shabab militants killed in southern Somalia

MOGADISHU Somalia (Xinhua) -- Somali forces on Monday killed two al-Shabab militants and injured three others in an offensive in the country’s southern region of Gedo, officials said.

Abdi Aziz Ali Omar, deputy commander of Somali national forces unit 49 told journalists that the forces launched an attack on al-Shabab’s base in Bardhere town in Gedo region.

"Our forces launched an attack this morning on the militants in Ali Hared and Jungle villages in Bardhere, we took the control of the two villages and inflicted heavy casualties on the extremists, killing two of them and injured three others," Ali said, adding that their forces are pursuing the remnant of the militants.

Residents said there was fierce fight between government forces and the militants in Bardhere town.

"Government forces attacked the militants in Ali Hared town, the two sides exchanged heavy weapons but government forces are in the town now and the militants withdrew from it," Awil Hasan, a local resident told Xinhua by phone.

The offensive came three weeks after Somali forces killed 18 militants in an operation in Somalia’s southern region of Middle Juba.

Somali forces backed by African Union Mission in Somalia have intensified operations on al-Shabab militants in central and southern Somalia to flush out the militants from those regions.

African Union troops arrest two al-Shabab terrorists in southern Somalia

MOGADISHU Somalia (Xinhua) -- The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops are on Sunday interrogating two al-Shabab terrorists who were arrested on Saturday in a foiled ambush in southern Somalia.

The AU mission said the two terrorists were arrested with detonators at Wanlawyen in Baledogole when the militants tried to ambush the troops who were escorting a logistics convoy from Arbiska moving towards Baledogole.

"As the convoy approached the black-spot, soldiers disembarked and moved on foot 500 meters away from the road where they met two men hiding, and upon checking, found in possession of improvised explosive device (IED) triggers," said the AU mission in a statement issued on Saturday night.

It said the two suspects have been taken to Baledogole for further interrogation for possible prosecution.

Al-Shabab was ousted from the capital Mogadishu in 2011 but the terror group is still capable of conducting attacks, targeting government installations, hotels, restaurants and public places.

Security forces kill four al-Shabab fighters in southern Somalia

MOGADISHU Somalia (Xinhua) -- Somali security forces on Tuesday killed a senior al-Shabab terrorist and three other fighters as they intensified assault against the insurgents in the Horn of Africa nation.

The ministry did not provide the identity of the senior al-Shabab leader killed.

Somali forces backed by African Union Mission in Somalia have stepped up operations on al-Shabab in central and southern Somalia, conducting consecutive operations to flush the militants out of those regions.

The group still stages attacks against Somali and African Union peacekeeping forces, targeting their bases, hotels and other public places despite intensified operations from the allied forces.
