Champions Naushad, Adnan, Akbar feted
as Izhar claims the Johnny Hellier Trophy

Mombasa Motor Club (MMC) held it’s annual awards gala night at Koroga Club last Friday, writes Samson Ateka.

The occasion which feted all club champions and winners of special awards served-up great moments ahead for the coastarians in the run up to the 2019 club and national events.

Also rewarded with trophies and certificates of appreciation were club sponsors and well-wishers including Mombasa Cement Limited (MCL), Graphic World Limited (Mombasa) and Synergy Gases.

MMC also rewarded its most dedicated club members including Dr. Ben Ochieng and his namesake Wellington Ochieng. Dr Ochieng and Wellington have for many years officiated on KNRC Mombasa and Clubman rallies.

Teams which participated in the 2018 coast clubman series were also not left behind.

They were rewarded by the club in appreciation of their support and determination towards the MMC activities.

They were Synergy Gases team of the Pandya brothers, Lota Motorsports, Team Yalfa, Coast Pekee of the Mirzas, Team D&A, Team Carmex, Roadtainers Racing of Yusuf Pasta, Team Mababu, Kilifi Complex, Team Kailesh of classic driver Kailesh Chauhan and Sagoo Rally Team (SRT) of Harpreet "Hapz" Sagoo.

The highlight of the occasion though was the feting of 4WD Champions Naushad Kara Lota and his codriver Adnan Din.

Akbar Khan and David Kago were feted for a season which saw them recapture the 2WD category.

Izhar Mirza who will be the only driver from MMC in the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) Premier Class after he was elevated last season carried home the Johnny Hellier Memorial trophy given to the highest placed MMC driver in the Mombasa KNRC event.

Izhar finished fifth in Mombasa Rally and indeed the highest placed coast driver.

The best MMC KNRC crew were Sohanjeet Singh Puee and his codriver Adnan.

Team Nanak won an unprecedented KNRC double with victory in the KNRC Group S and Division 2.

The year 2018 was Sohan’s first full KNRC season.

Also honored during the occasion were the Yalfa team of Ammar "Bushy" Haq and Victor Okundi who were named the most upcoming MMC crew.

Team Yalfa finished second overall in KNRC Division 2 category.

Adnan savoured his fourth award of the season, a double in the KNRC and another two on the Coast Rally Championship.

"The awards ceremony was really special, to be among the best in Kenya was a privilege, something many of us have dreamt of in our childhood, we can only thank the almighty for that.

"Making it a hat trick with the local club championship makes it even more special.

"Our club (MMC) and members have supported us a lot through the season, its amazing to be part of such a special club.

"We are ready and really looking forward to next season but we face challenges ... the biggest being sponsorship, we need a sponsor to be able to do a whole season otherwise it will probably not be possible, which will be really disappointing after such a good season."

Izhar aka Izzy said: "Its an honor to win the Johnny Helier trophy.

"Johnny was a great driver back in the day!

"Great job by our chaiman Roy McKenzie.

"Asante Sana to Mzee Hasu for giving us a track at Mombasa Cement.

"Good job by the MMC team.

"It’s growing in leaps and bounds, and good for the sport."

Naushad who is a former Johnny Hellier winner congratulated Izzy for doing MMC proud on the KNRC front.

"In our KNRC Izhar got this position as other MMC drivers either retired or were slower.

"For me I couldn’t do the KNRC event as my dad was in ICU and past away the next day.

"During the days of Alastair (Cavenagh) and Horsey brothers (Alex and Peter) there was no chance of winning it as they were much faster."
