Kenya domestic airline fares surge 18
per cent during Festive Season boom

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Kenyans travelling on domestic airlines paid the highest fares in December in years as charges rose by 18.43 percent as compared to the same period in 2017, latest data showed.

A surge in passenger numbers saw local airlines charge an average of 21,230 Kenyan shillings (210 U.S. dollars) for a return ticket in December 2018, up from 177 dollars during the same period in 2017, according to data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Thursday.

The jump in domestic airline fares outpaced those of international airlines, whose charges during a similar period rose from 1,095 dollars to 1,193 dollars, or an increase of 8.92 percent.

However, month-on-month, local flight fares rose 7.4 percent to 210 dollars in December 2018 while international fares increased 0.63 percent to 1,186 dollars, said the KNBS.

Ernest Manuyo, a business management lecturer at Pioneer Institute in Nairobi, attributed the surge in domestic airline travel to growing middle-class seeking convenience, class and fast travel.
