Chinese supermarkets in Kenya set to increase: industry lobby

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- The number of Chinese supermarkets setting up in Kenya are set to rise due to enhanced China-Kenya commercial ties, an industry lobby said on Thursday.

Wambui Mbarire, CEO Retail Trade Association of Kenya (RETRAK), told Xinhua in Nairobi that the entry of Chinese supermarkets will help diversify the product offering of the retail sector.

"We already have Chinese supermarkets in the major cities and moving forward we expect to see more to cater for the growing Chinese population," Mbarire said.

Mbarire added that even the existing supermarket chains are moving to cash in on the growing demand for Chinese goods.

"We have also seen major retailers devote shelf space to Chinese consumer goods. This is a good move because it will ensure that the whole community is able to access the goods that they want," she said.

She noted that the growing Chinese economic influence in Kenya cannot be ignored by the retail sector.

The CEO said that the industry is seeking to embrace an inclusive business model that caters for both local and foreign consumers.

She observed that due to the high potential of the retail sector, foreign supermarkets are moving into Kenya mostly through acquisition of domestic retail chains.
