Naivasha resort town braces for high
tourist arrivals amid festive season

Naivasha (Xinhua) --  Hoteliers in Kenya’s resort town of Naivasha are bracing for over 100,000 visitors next week when the main festive season kicks off.

Security has been intensified in Naivasha town, which is currently ranked second in terms of local tourism, with small-scale traders exuding confidence that this year will be more profitable than last year.

Naivasha has already shed off the negative image that it was associated with five years ago and now has the largest number of hotels between Nairobi and the North Rift town of Eldoret.

This year alone, the town welcomed the addition of Lake Naivasha Resort and Nest Boutique hotels, along Moi South Lake road, on top of over 60 hotels already in the neighborhood.

Kamau Njuguna, a board director of the East African Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, said on Friday the image of Naivasha town has changed positively.

He praised security officers for tackling once ran-away crime that painted the town in a negative light.

“Naivasha is just one hour’s drive from Nairobi and it has all the tourism facilities including Lake Naivasha and the world-renowned Hell’s Gate National Park,” said Kamau.

Ronnie Muraya, proprietor of Nest Boutique, said Naivasha town has given Mombasa a run for its money due to its proximity to Nairobi and improved security.

“It’s quite expensive to travel all the way to Mombasa. You can get all the services and entertainment in Naivasha,” said Kamau.

Peter Mehta, CEO of Crayfish Camp, said business has been picking up slowly ahead of the festive season though it could not be compared to last year.

Mehta, who is also the chairmen of Lake Naivasha Hotel Owners Association, noted that by October last year, they were fully booked.

He is optimistic that things could change this year.

“We expect over 100,000 visitors in the next one week and we have special packages for our visitors to make sure that they fully enjoy their holiday,” said Mehta.
