Namibia to host maiden Africa Women Conference

WINDHOEK, (Xinhua) -- Namibia will play host to African women from across the continent and the diaspora on Nov. 22-24 for a meeting themed “Women Empowerment and Development: A Collective Burden.”

In a statement on Tuesday, the Nigerian High Commission in Namibia said the event is the maiden edition of the Africa Women Conference (AWC), a platform for the strategic repositioning of the women of Africa.

The commission said the choice of Namibia as host country was a unanimous decision by the planning committee, based primarily on the fact that Namibia is one of the few countries in Africa where women are encouraged to reach their full potential.

“The beauty of the country, and the very many tourists’ attractions the country has to offer delegates also played a significant role in the decision,” the statement said.

According to the commission, hundreds of women are expected to be in attendance.

Organized by Echoes Africa Initiatives, New York, USA, and Helpline Foundation for the Needy, Abuja, Nigeria, the AWC is an annual gathering of women of Africa, and of African descent, in various fields of human endeavor, with a common interest to inspire, deliberate, and the agenda for sustainable growth of the African woman.

The conference was inaugurated in New York City in March during this year’s United Nations Conference on the Situation of Women.
