XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Kenyan police seize narcotics, hunt for suspects

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police said on Wednesday they have seized heroin and methamphetamine disguised as makeup kits destined for New Zealand and China.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the consignment was seized at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

“Heroin and methamphetamine worth millions of shillings, found concealed in a carton containing makeup kits and destined for New Zealand and China, was on Tuesday afternoon confiscated by DCI,” said George Kinoti, director of criminal investigations.

He said the officers were on routine checks when they stumbled on the narcotics on Tuesday afternoon.

Kinoti said they are looking for those behind the latest seizure, noting that tests on the cargo to establish quantity are ongoing.

He said detectives have already started investigations to nab the suspects.

No arrest was immediately made but police said they are looking for those who were dispatching the cargo. The origin of the cargo is Nairobi, meaning the owners are in the country.

This is the latest case of seizure of heroin in the city in the ongoing campaign against drug trafficking and consumption.
