Kamworor eyes World Cross Country
in Denmark after New York loss

NAIROBI, (Xinhua) -- New York Marathon bronze medalist Geoffrey Kamworor said he would defend his title at the World Cross Country Championships in Denmark in March.

Speaking in Nairobi, Kamworor said he was not the best man to win in New York and will now put his focus on winning the World Cross Country title for the fourth time in Aarhus, Denmark.

“I need to rest and recover. I had a back problem in the final stages of the race in New York and I had to slow down. It is normal in athletics to have injury,” Kamworor said on Thursday.

“However, I expect to be back in top form and fight to defend my title in Denmark,” he added.

Kamworor won in Denmark capital Copenhagen one of his three World Half Marathon titles in 2016 and he hopes the country will be good to him on his return in 2019 as he wishes to retain his cross country title.

“Kamworor suffered a back problem and these things happen. But he will be back in cross country and from there we shall see,” he added.

The Kenyan is also keen to compete on the track and will put his hat in the ring for selection ahead of the World Championships, which will be held in Doha, Qatar in October.

In London 2015, Kamworor had to settle for sixth place in the 10,000 meters and believes Kenya long wait to win the longest track competition will soon be over.

“We have top athletes and each year they get closer and closer. 2019 is open and nobody knows, it may be just the year for Kenya,” he added.
