25 Nations Confirm Participation in Mombasa Open
Tong-IL Moo-Do Martial Arts Championship

Coastweek -- Kenya Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation is a sports federation which was established in 1987 is affiliated to the World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation.

The federations’ main activities are training martial arts and organizing local and international tournaments and seminars.

Kenya was the first country to start training Tong-IL Moo-Do in Africa and is the continental headquarters of the sport.

The federation chairman, Clarence Mwakio said in 2013 the federation was awarded accreditation by the World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation to start an international tournament in the city of Mombasa Kenya.

The event was given a World Championship status and hence its name Mombasa Open Tong-IL Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship.

Participants allowed to the event are drawn from all over the world.

It is the only event of its kind in the World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation international events calendar which if formulated to market a city as a destination by using its name.

So far the federation has hosted five successful editions of this tournament drawing participants from various countries of the world.

Kenya Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation will be holding the 5th edition of the Mombasa Open Tong-IL Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship in 2017 and it was very successful.

Mwakio said the Kenya Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation shall hold the 6th edition of the Mombasa Open Tong-IL Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship – 2018 from 2nd to 11th September in Mombasa City.

The main competition shall be held on 8th and 9th September at the Aga Khan Academy - Mombasa Multi-Purpose Hall.

The Mombasa Open Tong-IL Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship is the first martial arts program of its kind in Africa.

The tournament is meant to bring together participants from across the globe together in Mombasa for ten days to take part in training martial arts and learning character education, compete against martial artists from all styles, participate in voluntary service to our communities, tour our beautiful historical sites and see our exotic wildlife through the Safari experience.

The competition is open to Tong-IL Moo-Do the host, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Kung-fu, Aikido, Jiu-jitsu, Ninjutsu, Hapkido, Capoeira, Japanese Kendo and Wushu.

The organizing committee has invited martial artists from all continents receiving very positive response.

So far over 25 nations have confirmed participation.

Some of the countries are;- Thailand, United States of America, United Kingdom, Paraguay, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Nepal, the Philippines, South Korea, Tanzania, Japan, Republic of the Congo , Uganda, South Africa, Netherlands, Benin, Iran, Germany, Mali, Zambia, Burkina Faso, Argentina, Turkey and Kenya.

The event is sponsored by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage, World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation, Texas Alarms, Toptime Shop, Regional Logistics Centre Ltd.,Divart, Smartlook Media, Severin Sea Lodge, MME and Fitness Challenge.

However we are still appealing for sponsorship from well-wishers to support this event.

We have approached the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife to sponsor the event too for it’s an event which has been supporting sports tourism.

Foreign teams and officials shall start arriving on 1st September and this year the World President and Grandmaster of the World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation Dr. Joon Hyo Seuk shall for the first time grace the event.

This shall be a great opportunity for the country for it shall position Kenya to lobby for future bigger events like the Martial Arts World Cup and the World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation Championship tournaments.

We expect a lot of competition from the Philippines, Thailand, Germany and Iran but Team Kenya is well prepared for the challenge.
