Coastweek -- Wananyuki FC team which won this year’s 14th Edition of the Unga ni Taifa Super Cup when they beat two-time winners Green Eagles FC 6-5 on penalty shoot-out at Mombasa Sports Club.

Wananyuki Win Coveted Unga ni Taifa Super Cup

Coastweek -- Wananyuki FC put up a sterling show to win for the first time the prestigious Unga ni Taifa Super Cup when they beat Green Eagles 5-4 on post-match penalties during the final match at Mombasa Sports Club.

The match watched by a capacity crowd saw the two teams settling to a one-all draw during the normal time.

It was during the penalties that Wananyuki managed to convert four and missed three with Eagles players scoring three and missed four.

The game stared at a cracking pace with Wananyuki with Spartak Lisbon U-18 team player Mohamed Magige making early attacks.

But Eagles started to dictate terms as time progressed and their reliable player Jimmy Baggae missing the target twice.

It was in the second half that Eagles came back strongly and deservedly took the lead just five minutes of this half when Baggae netted his fourth goal to become this year’s tournament top scorer.

Aroused by the goal, Wananyuki piled up the pressure and managed to equalize in the 60th minute through Mohammed Agege who play professional football in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon Under-17.

During penalty shoot-out, Wananyuki scored their through Bernard Safari, Mohamed Agege, Daniel Obushuru and Charles Festus with Swaleh kajo, Leonard Mwangi and Juma Alaba missing the target.

Eagles netted their spot kicks via Dahili Joachim, Jimmy Baggae and Pacific Odhiambo with James Mutua, IbrahimYassa, Saddam Hussein and Sunday Mwaila missing.

Wananyuki were awarded Sh100,000 with Eagles getting Sh50,000.

Mombasa County speaker Aharub Khatri gave Wananyuki Sh50,000, Eagles Sh30,000 and Congo Boys Sh20,000.

Other prizes went to Jimmy Baggae of Eagles (top scorer), up-coming player Musa Anwar, the best player Bernard Safari of Wananyuki and the player who played in all the 14th editions of the tournament, Mohamed Madigi of Mombasa Sports Club.

The tournament was sponsored by Mombasa Maize Millers who pledged to sponsor next year’s event as well.
