Zambia, Angola starts implementing visa exemption treaty

LUSAKA, (Xinhua) -- Zambia and Angola on Wednesday announced commencement of the implementation of a visa exemption agreement between the two countries signed in May.

The agreement exempting visa requirements for both diplomatic and ordinary passport holders was one of the agreements signed when Angolan President Joao Lourenco paid a state visit to Zambia.

Zambia’s acting Home Affairs Minister Michael Katambo said all legal requirements have been concluded to abolish visa requirements between the two countries.

In remarks delivered during a joint press briefing with Angolan Ambassador to Zambia Balbina Dias da Silva, the Zambian minister said the move was timely and will open up business opportunities between the peoples of the two countries.

He said it was one way of removing barriers to trade in the region in order to create open borders.

On her part, the Angolan envoy said the agreement will come into effect on August 16.

She said the agreement will go a long way in promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries and was a reflection of good leadership.
