XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Ugandan netball stars beat odds to reach international stage

KAMPALA Uganda (Xinhua) -- She Cranes, Uganda’s national netball team has again proved that despite the odds, they are determined to bag more medals.

With little financial support, the team last week confirmed their third consecutive win of the Africa Netball Championship in a tournament held in Lusaka, Zambia. The team won the title in 2017 and 2016.

The Lusaka win earned the She Cranes a place at the 2019 Netball World Cup scheduled to be held in Liverpool, England.

The latest ranking by the International Netball Federation put Uganda at the 7th position globally.

Since the team featured in the 2015 World Cup in Australia where they finished 8th, it has gained more confidence.

Peace Proscovia, team captain told Xinhua in a recent interview that the secret behind the star performance is in talent spotting and development.

Proscovia, who plays professional netball in England, said that Uganda is blessed with a lot of talent.

“Even before I started playing netball, Uganda has always been playing good netball. We have several tall girls and very swift,” she said.

At the secondary school and university level, once the girls who have talent are spotted, they are given scholarships to further their education.

Susan Anek, president of the Uganda Netball Federation told Xinhua that this has been critical in uplifting the standard of netball in the country.

She said this motivates other young players to improve themsleves in order to gain scholarships.

Anek said at the club level, players are given jobs by team sponsors. She said this also motivates the players to put up a good performance.

“It is one of the best things that has happened to netball where some of the players get employment and are able to earn besides what they get from playing netball. This has motivated many other younger players and this is helping the sport grow,” Anek said.
