Rwandan youth renovate playgrounds
to mark International Day of Youth

KIGALI (Xinhua) -- Rwandan youth countrywide on Saturday gathered at administrative cell levels to renovate football playgrounds to mark the International Youth Day.

At the national celebrations in Mwiri sector, eastern Rwanda, Rwandan youth minister Rosemary Mbabazi urged the youth to develop their sports talents and use internet in a constructive way while be cautions of cybercrime.

The youth population aged between 14 to 35 constitute about 40 percent of the total population of Rwanda that stands at 12 million, according to the figures of 2012 census conducted by National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.

This year’s International Day of Youth is themed with Safe Spaces for Youth.

Youth need safe spaces where they can come together, engage in activities related to their diverse needs and interests, participate in decision making processes and freely express themselves, said an introduction of the International Day of Youth 2018 on the website of Division for Inclusive Social Development of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

While there are many types of spaces, safe spaces ensure the dignity and safety of youth, read the introduction.

The General Assembly of UN in 1999 endorsed the recommendation that August 12 be declared International Youth Day.
