KIGALI Rwanda(Xinhua) --
The 17th edition of the East African
Secondary School Games kicked off Sunday at Ubworoherane stadium
in Musanze district, northern Rwanda, involving about 3,000
participants from the region.
Running from Aug. 12
to 20, the games is co-organized by Rwanda’s ministry of
education and the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools
Sports Association (FEASSA).
The participants are
primary and secondary school teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania
They will contest in
sports include football, volleyball, basketball, handball,
netball, swimming, badminton, tennis, table tennis, rugby,
hockey and athletics.

According to the
Rwandan ministry of education, this is the first time that the
games have competitions for primary schools.
The goal of the
regional school games is to nurture “the East African Spirit of
One People One Destiny” by enabling students to visit different
geographical sites in East Africa while also learning and
interacting with different cultures during the sports
competitions, according to the organizers.
