XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Hosts Nigeria explains why some African
athletes stranded at Lagos airport

ABUJA Nigeria (Xinhua) -- Hosts Nigeria said Thursday that some African athletes who came for the African Athletic Championship in Asaba failed to make online payments for their visas on arrival.

Local immigration authorities told the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that most of the athletes did not make the required payments.

“As you know, we don’t collect cash at immigration office any longer,” a top immigration officer told NAN.

At least 200 athletes from about 12 countries were stuck in Lagos waiting for connecting flight to Asaba to attend the championship which runs from Wednesday to Sunday.

World 1,500m silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot from Kenya was among the notable athletes stranded at the Lagos airport.

Fortunately, the issue has been addressed, although it took immigration officials some 48 hours to put the situation under control.

The visa on arrival policy by Nigeria began in 2012 with Kenya and a few African countries.

It came into a full stream with the introduction of the Ease-of-Doing-Business Policy by the Nigerian government in May 2017.
