XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Expert says agriculture has potential to
play major role for Botswana economy

GABORONE, (Xinhua) -- Botswana has been advised that agriculture remains paramount as the country hunts for alternatives to mineral dependence.

Through concerted efforts, great focus, and strategic planning, the country can make greater strides in commercial agriculture, said Calistas Chijoro, head of capital markets and channels at Stanbic Bank Botswana, on Wednesday.

“This could potentially see growth of small, micro, and medium enterprises in this sector, as well as wield a significant impact on our GDP,” Chijoro said Gaborone, capital of Botswana.

Statistics indicate that agriculture contributed 368.40 million pula (about 36.84 million U.S. dollars) to Botswana’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter of 2018.

Botswana has been suffering from uncertainties in the mining sector since 2014, leading to half of the country’s mines being put under care and maintenance, despite mining activity accounting for a large chuck of GDP, government revenues and foreign exchange earnings.
