XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Winnie Chebet Added To Team For
the World Indoor Championships

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Former World Junior 800m champion Winnies Chebet has been granted Tuesday a slot in Kenya team to the World Indoor Championships team, which starts in Birmingham, England on Thursday.

Chebet, who has shifted to the 1,500m race, was granted a wild card of the competition.

Paul Mutwii, Vice President of the Athletics Kenya, said,  “We have named Chebet in the team, making it eight athletes. The final decision about entering an individual athlete for the World Indoor Championships rests with the athlete’s national federation and we decided to use this clause to secure her entry.”

Chebet ran a personal best time of 4:07:86 in the women’s 1,500m during the second leg of the 2018 World Indoor Tour in Dusseldorf, Germany on Feb. 6.

Usually only two athletes per nation per discipline are allowed to enter the IAAF World Indoor Championships, but a wild card entry allows for a third athlete to compete.
