French Cajot wins Uganda Badminton Open

KAMPALA, (Xinhua) -- French player Pierrick Cajot won men’s singles of the 2018 Uganda International Badminton Open Championship, beating Germany’s Jonathan Persson 21-17, 21-11 on Sunday at the Lugogo Arena.

“This is a sweet victory for me since it is my first time to play in Uganda,” Cajot said.

Cajot caused a major upset by seeing off top seed and Africa’s top player Georges Julien Paul of Mauritius in the quarter final before beating Syria’s Aljallad Ahmad 17-21, 22-20, 21-14 in semi.

Cajot, ranked 161th in the world, received a cash prize of 1,200 U.S. dollars.

In the women’s singles, Africa’s top player Kate Foo Kune stopped Hadia Hosny from Egypt 21-15, 21-10. It was a repeat of the final of the All Africa Senior Championship in Algeria that the player from Mauritius also won.

Kazakhstan’s Artur Niyazov and Dmitriy Panarin won the men’s doubles title, while the Egyptian pair of Hadia Hosny and Doha Hanny won the women’s doubles finals.
