Rwanda has pulled out of the regional Africa Zone
Five Basketball Club Championships, forcing organizers to seek
alternative venues in Kenya’s Mombasa and Dar es Salaam,
Federation secretary Vitalis Gode said Rwanda’s Amahoro Stadium
in Kigali, which is the only venue that has an indoor court in
Rwanda and meets international standards to host Federation
International Basketball Association (FIBA) events, is under
renovation and can’t be allowed to host the event.
This has forced a
last minute change of venues with Mombasa and Dar es Salaam
picked to stage the women and men’s tournaments respectively.
“We had no choice
but to take the games away from Kigali due to the unavailability
of a standard venue. Mombasa and Dar es Salam will step in, but
they too must be assessed to see that they meet the threshold
for a tournament of this caliber,” Gode said on Wednesday.
Kenya will have six
teams in the competition with Ports Authority, Equity Bank and
Strathmore University each present two teams to the tourney,
which is part of the 2018 FIBA competitions.
Ports Authority are
the women champions. They first won the title in 2016 in Dar es
Salaam and retained it last year in Kampala, Uganda. City Oilers
from Uganda are the defending champions in the men’s category.
