Kenya to host African universities’ conference on agriculture

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Kenya will in October host a biannual conference organized by universities that offer agricultural courses in Africa, organizers said on Friday.

Peter Mbithi, vice chancellor of the University of Nairobi, said the sixth biennial conference of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture will bring together over 2,000 delegates from across the continent.

“The conference will help contribute to new ways of tackling challenges faced in the agriculture sector,” Mbithi, who chairs the organizing committee, told journalists in Nairobi.

He said the conference is important as it will help universities develop innovative solutions of making Africa self reliant in food production.

Mbithi said the conference aims at bringing true value and worthiness of African universities in shaping policy discourses and presenting research outputs that add value for the private sector and other stakeholders.

Organizers say that the forum, which has 85 members from 35 universities in the continent, is aimed at fostering integration of African universities into the national agricultural innovation systems and also provides a platform for training quality graduates to support development processes in Africa.
