XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Ethiopian police arrest two for sorcery

ADDIS ABABA, (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara regional state announced on Monday they have arrested two individuals for sorcery.

Chief Crime Detective Fanos Endarge of Debre Birhan city, Amhara regional state, said the two suspects are accused of promising to cure 12 individuals of their illnesses through sorcery acts in exchange for money, state-owned Ethiopia News Agency reported.

The two suspects were arrested on Jan. 20 while in the process of receiving 101 Ethiopian birr (3.75 U.S. dollars) from an individual to “cure” his illness.

The suspects were also reportedly caught with two kg of honey and one liter of local liqor supposedly to be used for the “curing” process.

Although sorcery is a criminal offense in Ethiopia, it’s relatively common in parts of the country where people turn to wizards and witches to deal with issues such as marital disputes or business deals, or to forecast their future.
