Coastweek-- Mombasa Hospital was the venue of the five-day Medical Equipment Calibration Training conducted by Kenya Bureau of Standards in conjunction with the Medical Equipment Calibration Laboratories of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Cairo University.

The training was attended by 35 participants from Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda.

The official opening of the training was performed by Mr. Abbas Nasser, Administrative Director, Mombasa Hospital.

Mr. Nasser, in his address, noted that KEBS started to train medical engineers on medical equipment calibration seven years ago.

The aim of this initiative was to raise awareness on the need to calibrate medical equipment.

The initiative also serves to strengthen health institutions that embrace ISO 9001 Quality Management System of which calibration is a requirement.

He commended KEBS, who have so far trained over 150 biomedical engineers, to become medical calibration practitioners, trainers, auditors and assessors.

Mr. Nasser stated that calibration in hospitals was a significant contribution to quality of diagnosis, treatment, safety of patients, medical personnel and medical equipment.

Level II course, which started on Monday, was the second offered in partnership with the Medical Equipment Calibration Laboratories (MECL) of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Cairo University.

He welcomed the University’s partnership with KEBS and extended a warm welcome to Dr. Ahmed Ehab, Associate Professor from Cairo University and his team for offering his University’s expertise in the field of equipment calibration training.

Mr. Augustine Wachira, Deputy Regional Manager of KEBS, thanked the Hospital for hosting the five-day training.
