Ethiopia and Norway planning to strengthen co-operation

ADDIS ABABA Ethiopia (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia and Norway on Friday stressed the need to strengthen cooperation in the field of migration and refugee management.

The two countries reiterated their commitment to work together in the migration sector as part of the visit of Norwegian Minister of Migration and Integration, Sylvi Listhaug, to the east African country as of Wednesday.

Hirut Zemene, Ethiopian State Minister of Foreign Affairs, in her discussion with Listhaug have reaffirmed the commitment to work more closely on migration and refugee management, according to the statement issued by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.

Listhaug further underscored Ethiopia’s role in the South Sudan peace process and appreciated the East African country’s commitment in handling large number of refugees from neighboring countries, it was noted.

She also commended the Ethiopian government’s efforts in tackling illegal migration from the country, saying that “I give credit to your efforts on people going through Libya.”

Zemene on her part also noted that migration has become an international agenda that is affecting many countries, adding that the way to mitigate migration should be tackling the root causes leading to migration.

Zemene further explained how Ethiopia, as the top recipient of refugees in Africa, is undertaking refugee management through its open-door policy.
