Fazi Khan secures maiden KNRC victory on Fly 540 KMSC Rally

Coastweek -- It was tears and cheers for Division One ace, Farhaaz "Fazi" Khan" as he completed an emphatic five- stage showdown to win the season ending Fly 540 KMSC Rally 2017 by minutes at Andy’s Corner and Lisa Farm over the weekend, writes SAMSON ATEKA.

It was an emotional win for Farhaaz who missed the Division 1 title victory to Karan Patel during last year’s events on Guru Nanak.

His calm and assured match to the podium belied excitement which was bubbling underneath and it exploded in a solid stream of joy when he and his navigator Keith Henrie drove their Oilibya spon-sored Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 10 to the finish podium.

Farhaaz, nephew of legendary Aslam Khan and son of Arshad Khan was all smiles and had his campaign effectively sewn up when his closets challengers Eric Bengi/ Tutta Mionki (Subaru Impreza N12) and Jasmeet Chana (Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X) failed to survive the demanding conditions. Bengi went out on the last stage with turbo failure.

Chana, who was joint second with Farhaaz on 22.08 at first service in Lisa Farm after tackling CS12 Andy’s Corner –Ilposat Stage drove really well on the first two stages but went out before the start of the third stage with gearbox gremlins.

"First and second stages were all good.

"But when we came to start the third section we smelt a bit of oil and noticed a hole in the gearbox.

"It’s an excruciating mechanical problem, so we decided to retire as we didn’t want to damage the car more." - Jasmeet.

On Sunday however he sealed an impressive victory in the presence of his father Arshad Khan and in front of enthusiastic fans who watched as Farhaaz steered his Mitsubishi to the summit.

"I just don’t’ even know how I am feeling, it is such a great thing after missing the KNRC Division 1 title to Karan Patel. I must admit that my navigator was spot on calling the pace-notes throughout the rally,’’ said.

Farhaaz’s dad Arshad Khan said:

"This is just perfect that my son has won his first title in the country I was born.

"It’s so great.

"This is just perfect that my son has won his first title in the KNRC which we have all rallied for many years", Arshad added.

Physically challenged Nikhil Sachania navigated by Alfir Khan in a hand controlled EVO10 didn’t just chalk up a career first podium but his first top 10 KNRC finish.

Nikhil, son of Dinesh Sachania "Kaka Samani" added another significant trophy to his cabinet two years after winning the KMSF Motor Sports Personality of the year 2015.

Kulwinder Sandhu aka Sweaty returned behind the wheel of a rally car (his son’s ex Ian Duncan EVO9) after a decade navigated by Feisal Khan "Fayo" and managed to finish 4th overall.

Kulwineder, father of Jansher Sandhu is incidentally a former Clerk of the course for KMSC Rally.

Leonardo Varese and his partner Kigondu Kareithi finished fifth and first in 2WD although he didn't score KNRC 2WD points.

For Leo and KV, 2017 went down as the most successful year with a maiden career top 10, Safari Rally victory and the Two wheel Championship title for the umpteenth time.

After 10 years of rallying and a tenth Safari attempt, Sportpesa Rally Team of Leonardo and Kigondu finally laid their hands on the coveted Safari Rally title when the dust settled on the FIA African Rally Championship event at Afraha Stadium last year.

The duo have finished the Safari Rally second thrice and had a few disappointing outings in the world’s famous Safari.
