Kenyan stocks inch higher

NAIROBI, (Xinhua) -- All the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) key indices rose slightly on Wednesday as prices of selected stocks went up.

The indicative NSE 20 Share Index closed the day at 3,825.47 from 3,820.74 on Monday. The NSE All share Index (NASI), on the other hand, ended the day at 172.73, a rise from 170.80 points while the NSE 25 Share Index stood at a high of 4,410.91.

The 20 Share Index was mainly boosted by Kenya Airways, which surged 136 percent from 0.02 U.S. dollars to 0.12 dollars when it resumed trading following a two weeks suspension.

The suspension was to wait for a share split and the consolidation of the company’s stock as part of the airlines’ capital restructuring plan.

Others stocks that went up during the session by between 0.6 percent and 3 percent were Centum, Scan group, CFC Stanbic and Cooperative Bank.

Safaricom, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Kenya Power, Equity Bank and Kenya Airways accounted for over 80 percent the total turnover.

Equity turnover surged to 8.5 million dollars on a volume of 28 million shares up from 26 million worth 5.7 million dollars.  .
