Zimbabwe’s former finance minister in
hospital after military detention: lawyer 

HARARE, (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe’s former finance minister who had been in military custody since the military took over government on Nov. 15 was released on Friday and is in a hospital for injuries sustained from beatings while in detention, his lawyer told Xinhua.

Lovemore Madhuku said Ignatius Chombo was receiving treatment under police custody and faces charges of corruption and abuse of office while as local government minister 10 years ago.

“He (Chombo) was handed over to the police this morning. He was dumped at his home gate and immediately picked up by a group of police officers who were waiting form him at his residence,” Madhuku said.

Chombo is among former president Robert Mugabe’s associates who were picked up by the military after their intervention that culminated in Mugabe resigning Tuesday.
