Nigeria identifies 2,778 of its citizens in Libyan detention camps

ABUJA, (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government on Tuesday said it has identified 2,778 of its citizens languishing in detention camps in Libya.

In a statement, the foreign ministry said the Nigerian migrants, now ready for repatriation, were kept in some accessible detention camps in Libya.

They were identified by officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Libya who visited the detention camps, according to the statement.

The Nigerian citizens who were identified had been issued emergency travel certificates, the foreign ministry said.

Some 250 Nigerian migrants are expected back home later on Tuesday, the ministry disclosed.

“The repatriation is a continuous exercise...the embassy will continue to engage the legitimate government in Libya and other stakeholders in addressing the plight of Nigerian migrants in that country,” the statement added.
