XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Standing Atop The Highest Point In Africa
At Uhuru Peak On Mount Kilimanjaro

Coastweek-- We have heard that very clichéd statement – When was the last time you did something for the first time?

This time it was a motley crowd of fourteen ranging from 45-60 years of age who wanted to step foot on the highest point on the continent of Africa. They comprised of Doctors, Engineers, Dentist, Corporate executives and entrepreneurs – all brought together by their shared childhood -  living in Kenya !

Yes, all but one, spent their formative years in Kenya, including the coast and life has now dispersed them far and wide - Australia, UK and within Kenya to Nairobi and Mombasa.

This was going to be a very special hike indeed!

The group chose to reach Uhuru peak, standing tall at 5896m, through the Lemosho route spending all of 8 days on the mountain.

There are many routes to get to the summit but the group chose the 8 day lemosho route as it gives a better chance to acclimatize to the high altitude and it is also considered the most scenic route on the mountain. The success of their climb vindicated their decision of the route as all of them finally made it to Stella Point which sits on the rim of the crater – No mean feat considering  most of us were heading from sea level!!

A Group of 10 tackled the real summit which was only a short distance away with not much climbing to do. They managed to reach the top – Uhuru Peak.

After a short halt at the summit for pictures the group started the descent and made it to Moshi after having successfully conquered what is one of the most difficult mountains in the world.

We went to the mountain as good friends, trying to catch up with all that has happened in our lives since we parted, and returned back as a family.

The team consisted of :- Dr. Sundeep Chavda, M. Shah, Ms. Khilna Malde, Ms. Bijal Shah, Mr. Dinesh Hirani, Mr. Vasanth Sanghani, Mr. Dipak Soni, Ms. Muni Soni, Ms. Renu Wanzah, Mr. Ashok Kumar, Ms. Sweatal Shah, Kuntesh Shah, Dr. Ritu Patel and Parisha Patel.
