Uganda police arrest head of anti-narcotics unit over drug trafficking

KAMPALA Uganda (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan police on Monday said it has arrested its head of anti-narcotics unit who had been on the run over the ongoing investigation into drug trafficking.

Asan Kasingye, the police spokesperson told Xinhua that Tinka Zarugaba, the commissioner in charge of anti-narcotics who has been at large over the disappearance of 85 kgs of cocaine was arrested on Saturday.

The arrest of Zarugaba brings a total number of Ugandan police officers arrested to nine during the force’s investigation of their involvement into drug trafficking.

“We have him (Zarugaba) in our custody as investigation into the theft, tempering with cocaine exhibits and replacing with different substances,” said Kasingye.

“The accused officers will be produced in courts of law as soon as our investigations are complete and files sanctioned by the Director of Public prosecutions,” he said.

The arrest of the nine officers came amidst reports that 87 suspected drug dealers had disappeared from police custody.

The East African country is seen as a transit point for drug traffickers from South America and Southeast Asia.
