First Ever Daikyo Hockey 5’s Festival Held in Mombasa

Coastweek -- The 1st ever Hockey 5’s Festival was hosted in Mombasa by the Coast Hockey Association (CHA) and sponsored by Daikyo Japan Motors.

This version of hockey, even though being a Federation of International Hockey (FIH) Olympic recognised sport, is rarely played in Kenya.

Thus, CHA were proud to host this 1st edition and the eight teams that participated really enjoyed learning this form of hockey. It was played on the multi-purpose astro turf pitch at the Um Kulsum Mosque grounds in Kizingo.

Pool A consisted of Mvita XI, Malindi Hockey Club, Veterans, and MSC Warthogs. Pool B hosted Mombasa West, Mvita Wazee, Pwani XI and Mombasa Sports Club.

The league rounds saw the teams settle down very fast and some high scores were recoded, such as Msa West 1 – 8 Msa Sports Club or Malindi Hockey 3 – 9 MSC Warthogs.

Mvita XI and MSC Warthogs qualified for the semi’s from Pool A, while Mvita Wazee and MSC Warthogs qualified from Pool B.

In the 1st Semi Final MSC Warthogs came from behind to beat Mvita Wazee 4 – 3, with goals from Kevin Asaya, Joel Naliaina and a double from Sydney Rubia to seal their final berth.

Mvita Wazee scored through a brace from Enox Kalama and a consolation goal from Wycliffe Obonyo.

In the 2nd semi-final Mvita XI went on to trash newsboy’s Pwani XI  6 – 1, with two goals from Ali Kale and four from prolific striker Farhan Khan.

Pwani XI did manage to get their names on the score sheet through Daniel Sanga.

The final was a closely fought affair with MSC Warthogs scoring first through Sydney Rubia in the 2nd min, but Mvita replied instantly through Austin Otieno and then took the lead in the 4min with Otieno ’s second goal for Mvita to take a 2-1 half time lead.

In the 2nd half MSC danger man Rubia scored to equalize the game in the 9th min, only for Otieno and Ali Kale to again put Mvita ahead with two quick goals.

Rubia did manage to pull one back in the last minute of the match, but it still ended with victory to Mvita XI 4 – 3 MSC Warthogs.

CHA Chairman Oliver Mascarenhas thanked the sponsors Daikyo Japan Motors for their support and also obtaining permission to use the multi-purpose Astro Turf pitch.

He invited other corporate firms and the local county sports administration to also look into supporting hockey in Mombasa.
