XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Ugandan Mihogo and Sweet Potato plus Tanzanian potatoes!

Coastweek -- The recent drought in Kenya and how humans find solutions - I learnt something amazing at “light house” today.

The Mihogo and Sweet potato was from Kampala!  Imagine.

Why not from Diani?

The recent drought has caused many shortages.

How does the vendor get daily fresh supplies?

He just finished talking on mobile to his friend in Kampala - the guy had just dispatched a sackful from Kampala by overnight bus... he will collect it from the bus station early in the morning by tuk-tuk!

No big deal!

How does he pay him? Simple - by Mpesa money transfer.

Apparently the phone transfer works cross border and even manages exchange rate conversions between KE/UG/TZ!

Has he been to Uganda ?

Yes ...many times. Hops on the bus and visits his friend who supplies him the Mogo and Sweet Potato !

It also rains a lot in UG unlike Kenya and food is abundant were his casual observations... the Kenyan ID is good enough no need for passports!

By the way the Potatoes were from neighbouring Tanzania - similar arrangements.

Amazing world and an eye opener on how the East African countries are getting closer.

Lighthouse when it rains is always an interesting outing
