Electric power outlets to benefit 25 million Mozambicans by 2030

MAPUTO Mozambique (Xinhua) -- Nearly 25 million Mozambicans will benefit from an expansion plan connecting more rural and urban areas to the national grid by the national electricity company, Mozambican authorities announced here on Monday.

"Every year the electricity company invests around 100 million U.S. dollars to expand electric power throughout the country, and we believe that by 2030 we will cover the entire country, which means every home or family will benefit from connecting their houses to the national grid," said Pascoal Bassela from the Mozambique Electric power company.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, Bassela said the plan will be successfully executed, considering partners’ commitment to support the goal.

Leticia Klemens, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, also said the country needs not only to diversify its sources for electric power generation to meet national demand, but also to play an important role in supplying resource in the southern African region.

"We would also like to reinforce our position in the region as supplier of electric power through natural gas," said the minister.

Currently energy authorities are aiming to build a combined central power plant estimated at 180 million U.S. dollars with the generation capacity of 106 megawatts in the southern part of the country.
