Kilifi’s Piero Cannobio Wins as Ali Mirza
Crowns Rally Debut with Second Position

Coastweek -- Piero Cannobio was the star attraction as the Mombasa Motor Club Rally came to a dramatic end at Mombasa Cement farm-field in Vipingo, reports SAMSON ATEKA.

Navigated by Sylvia Firgo in a Mitsubishi Evolution X, Piero clocked 53:38minutes in the 90km rally to beat second placed Izhar Mirza by 1 minute 36 seconds.

“The rally and routes were amazing. MMC did a great job, special thanks to Mombasa Cement for allowing us to race on closed roads.

“It was such a great experience for is all away from the hustle and bustle of public roads and a good feeling for us to emerge the victors,” said Kilifi county based Piero, who is also a highly seeded driver in the KNRC.

Mirza better known as “Izzy” in rallying circles drove a Mitsubishi Evolution 9 and was happy with second, incidentally with a new navigator in his younger brother Ali Mirza.

Ali becomes the newest member from Coast Pekee stable to join the rally-sport after guiding his brother Izhar to second overall position contrary to all expectations.

Ali who started his racing career with go karts at Solai track in Nakuru and Mombasa Go Kart joins his dad Ajaz who is the team principal for Coast Pekee, his two brothers Izhar and Adil who are KNRC regulars and mum Ruhi who raced buggies at Jamhuri Park some few years back in the National Autocross series.

Sohanjeet Singh Puee sealed the podium dash in 59.21minutes which wasn’t that bad considering that he had some few cobwebs to shake off after a 12 month sabbatical.

“The rally route was superb, a very fast track indeed. It was great to be behind the wheel after a year and I was very pleased with my result and the cars performance.

“I’d like to thank my family and my navigator Gurveet Pandal for supporting me through the rally, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”

Hapz Sagoo of Sagoo Rally Team and Coast Champion Naushad Kara didn’t finish due to some car gremlins. Naushad’s new crossbreed Subaru went into safe mode.

Sagoo said: “Rally was good. Route was excellent. I have driven after an 18months lull so was well excited. Car fuel pump had issues so we had no full power and could not go above 100kph. But enjoyed it.”

Kamlesh Pandya of Synergy Gases Rally Team finished fifth and this is what he had to say: “Roy (McKenzie) made sure we do not loose concentration by making the route fast and twisty.

“My rear right suspension went through the body of the car at 160kph on one of the jumps ripping through and the mounting and spring fell off in the section cs1.

“We limped to the service and my able team of Minesh Govind and Sudesh Hakuuz Hirani brainstormed how to modify the lost mounting and replaced it to enable us finish.

“The Rally made me and Prakash bond really well. Next rally will be a blast.

“Asante to Mombasa Cement Limited for the use of their quarry to give us a 100 per cent closed roads.”

Sagar Kukadia of Kukadia Rally Team was happy with fourth position. “We had a pretty good run.

“The route was impressive and we’d planned to push but we cracked a shock mounting just after the first loop.

“We were forced to slow down and eventually broke it in the stage, managed to fix in service but then broke the second spare in the next loop and had to finish the last loop with the broken one.

“Not too bad though, we pulled through and managed a good finish. Thanks to all our sponsors and a special thanks to dad for the never ending support. Impressive route and terrific effort by Roy as always,” Sagar said.
