Confucius Institute Day promotes Chinese culture in Namibia

WINDHOEK (Xinhua) -- Confucius Institute Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and joy in Namibian capital Windhoek on Friday.

The event, hosted by the Confucius Institute of the University of Namibia at Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School. The day’s activities exposed learners to the Chinese culture, including cuisine, language and literature, according to Zhang Sufang, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Namibia.

“Through this platform, I can experience Chinese culture in its diversity, which enhances my understanding of the Chinese culture,” said 17-year-old Hanna Hipangelwa, a grade 11 student at Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School. She tested her skills in writing Chinese characters Friday.

Hipangelwa said exposure to Chinese cuisine and other aspects of culture helps her master the language.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Namibia has trained an accumulative number of 767 students since its establishment in August 2013, according to Zhang.

The Chinese institute teaching sites have also been expanded and courses are offered on three other satellite campuses of the University.

There are vast opportunities for Namibian students and scholars to steep themselves in the Chinese culture, said Zhang, citing scholarships, summer camps, Chinese proficiency competition.

“I will keep perfecting my Chinese language skills, to integrate more with the Chinese people in Namibia and beyond. It gives me a competitive edge,” Hipangelwa said.
