Zambia’s new parliament to start sittings
next week following August polls

LUSAKA Zambia (Xinhua) -- Zambia lawmakers who emerged winners in last month’s general elections will begin their sittings next week, a senior official from the National Assembly said on Wednesday.

Clerk of the National Assembly Doris Mwiinga said in a statement that the sittings will commence on Sept. 23 following the August 11 general elections.

She said the sittings of the first session of the 12th National Assembly will commence following the issuance of a gazette by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Patrick Matibini.

The ruling Patriotic Front (PF) has 80 lawmakers while opposition parties have 62, with 14 independent lawmakers in the 156-member parliament.

The lawmakers are expected to report for registration and orientation from Sept. 18 to 22, it added.
