XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Implementation Of Regional Infrastructure Projects

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- President Uhuru Kenyatta has commended the  progress which has been realized in implementation of regional infrastructure projects.

Speaking during the 5th Northern Corridor Integration Summit in Nairobi, Kenyatta said progress has been made to ease congestion at the ports and diverse barriers along the main transport corridors that hindered faster movement of goods.

“Containers from Mombasa once took 18 days to reach Kampala; that has now been reduced to 4 days.  The journey from Mombasa to Kigali now takes six days in contrast to 22 days not long ago,” he told the summit.

The day-long summit was attended by Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Salva Kiir of South Sudan including high ranking officials from East Africa Community (EAC) member states.

The East African infrastructure projects include the rehabilitation and expansion of the Northern Corridor connecting the port of Mombasa with Kampala, Kigali, Bujumbura and the Eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) and the improvement of the Central Corridor connecting the port of Dar- es-Salaam with Bujumbura, Kigali and DR Congo.

Other infrastructure projects are the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) project, a transport corridor that will form important transport connectivity between Eastern Africa and Western Africa countries further promoting intra-Africa trade and investment.

Under the joint tripartite agreement, Uganda committed to lead the railway development and political federation sector while Rwanda is spearheading customs, single tourist visa and East African Community e-identity card as Kenya leads the implementation of the oil pipeline and electricity generation.
