High-end smart phones gain foothold in Kenya

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- The market for high-end smart phones in Kenya is steadily growing as more people go for the multifunctional costly gadgets that stand out.

Uptake and demand for the mobile phones, according to telecoms selling them, is on the rise as manufacturers compete to launch new gadgets in Kenya.

Phone makers have in the recent months launched expensive gadgets in the capital Nairobi with a lot of fanfare. The latest high-end device to be unveiled is the Samsung Galaxy S5.

The smart phone, which costs 872 U.S. dollars, started selling a week ago. And according to Safaricom, up take has been good.

The company in a statement last Friday said it had pre-sold over 300 Samsung Galaxy S5 devices before the gadgets were officially unveiled in the country.

Safaricom, which holds about 60 percent of Kenya’s market share with more than 20 million subscribers, notes that it sold over 400, 000 high-end smart phones last year.

This represents 23 percent of the total smart phones sold through the company’s retail outlets across Kenya that year.

While most of the high-end devices were sold in Nairobi, where more people have good incomes, a sizeable number were purchased outside the capital, including in towns like Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret.

According to the telecom, over 100,000 smart phones are sold in Kenya each month.

Analysts note that the smart phone market in Kenya and across Africa is expected to double in the next two years.
