Lions Club Of Mombasa Pwani Organize
‘Mini Olympics’ For Disabled Children

Coastweek -- To celebrate World Service Day, Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani in District 411A organized a “Mini-Olympics” for disabled children to participate in sporting events to display what they are able to do and to prove that “disa-bility does not mean inability” on Sunday, October 06, 2013 at ASK Show Ground.

Over 1600 children with varying disabilities such as physically handicapped, mentally challenged, hearing impaired, blind and partially sighted were transported to the ASK Show Ground Mombasa in the early hours of Sunday morning free of charge courtesy of the following buses:

A.O. Bayusuf & Sons Trans-port Co. Ltd, Modern Coast Bus Services, TSS Bus Company, Mash Bus Company, Simba Coach Bus Company, Ketty Tours & Safaris Ltd and Coast Bus Company.

Each was given a T-Shirt, which displayed the Lions Logo and the sponsors who were: Mombasa Maize Millers, Malindi Salt Works, Simba Colt Motors and Shreeji Group of Companies.

Each child was given happy pack which contained confec-tionaries, biscuits, water, juice, stationery, plate, cup and spoon.

The event started off with prayers for our brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the Westgate, Nairobi.

One minute silence was also observed.

A march-past was arranged to parade the children and their minders and the Chief Guest was none other than the District Governor Lion Teja Kalsi and his Gracious Lady Gursharan, PDG Lion Ramji Patel, the President of Lion Club of Mombasa Pwani Lion Dr. Lata Magon, Co-Convenors Lion Tony D’Silva and Lion Inderjeet S. Main, Region Chairperson Lion Mary Mwami and her spouse Lion Mwami, Zone Chairperson Lion Bhadresh Shah and his Gracious Lady Ketki, invited Lion dignitaries and Ladies acknowledged their salutes.

The event was officially declared open by the District Governor Teja Kalsi after the Kenyan National Anthem was played by the Agakhan Band and the Likoni School for the Blind Band and the games began.

Our Member of Parliament for Mvita Constituency Hon. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir paid a visit to ASK Show Ground to witness this activity for himself and interacted with the children and Lions at large.

Track and field events were organized and the residents of Mombasa witnessed totally blind children running a 100-meter dash faster than most able people.

Physically Challenged boys and girls showed how fast they run on crutches. Mentally handicapped young children com-peted to fill sand in bottles.

100 competitive events were organized and the top three participants in each event received prizes in true Olympic fashion.

These prizes were: Blankets – donated by Rahma Foundation by Hon. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Towels – Mr. Sanjeev Agarwal, Managing Director of Mombasa Eye and Laser Centre, Mosquito Nets – Armco Ltd and Ram Trade Ltd through PDG Lion Ramji Patel.

Refreshments throughout the day and a sumptuous lunch was served. It must be mentioned that for the last 26 consecutive years this lunch has been prepared and donated by Lion Mahendra C. Shah and his family.

Such a mega activity cannot be a success without material, financial and physical support of well-wishers such as Papyrus Africa Ltd who contributed Kshs 150,000/-, Lymuel Engineering Kshs 100,000/- amongst many others including the entire membership of Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani.

Towards late afternoon the games were declared closed for the children to return to their various schools.

Special thanks to the manage-ment of A.S.K. Mombasa International Show Ground for making this ground avail-able,Coastal Agency for supply of water, Corrugated Sheets Ltd for provision of transport, Lohana Hall for the provision of tables chairs and cooking area, the Lions Eye and Blood Centre Staff and the Department of Education for their valuable cooperation.
