Ethiopian Airlines Sponsors Skal AGM At Fort Jesus

Coastweek-- SKAL Kenya Coast held its annual general meeting on the 22nd of March 2013, at the historic Fort Jesus where the dinner was catered by Severin Sea Lodge, and the event kindly sponsored by Ethiopian Airlines.

The AGM was very well attended by Skalleagues who unanimously elected Mr Mehboob Harunani to continue for the second term as President of Skal Kenya Coast.

Also in attendance at the AGM were Mr Tony Clegg Butt, Chairman for the Bid 2015 Congress for Skal Kenya and Mr David Fisher, International Councilor.

In his brief President’s report, Mr. Harunani thanked his committee who had been a great team and had committed their valuable time and effort towards Skal with passion.

Coastweek-- Seen receiving the Traditional Skal Rose Bowl for 2012/2013 is Ms Anna Conte (Private Safaris) from the previous winner for 2011/2012 Silvester Mbandi. Looking on is President Skal Msa Mehboob Harunani.

He also thanked all the Skalleagues for have given him the respect and co-operation by attending monthly dinners in good numbers.

He talked on the membership growth which saw a 25 per cent increase during the year, resulting in the club achieving the membership growth certificate at the 2012 Seoul Skal International Congress.

He also talked on the committee having regular monthly meetings and having had regular monthly members’ functions.

Skal has reloaded with activities month after month and thanked various sponsors and the raffle prize donors.

He informed members on the accounts being very much in order and the club being financially sound. He informed members that when he took over his main challenge was membership growth, sponsorships, attendance and financial stability; which he was proud to declare that with the help of his dynamic committee he achieved it.

He was also looking forward for the club to take up charity projects related to tourism for the forthcoming term.

On tourism, members noted that the high season was not very encouraging as we were now going towards the low season.

He urged members to be optimistic and patient as we move to a new era in Kenyan with the formation of Counties and Senate Government.

On behalf of Skal the President congratulated the new President Elect and his Deputy as well as the newly introduced Governor for Mombasa County.

He urged them to look into the tourism fraternity and to set up a strong Board to market “destination Kenya” as we were losing out very fast to our neighbours in regards to tourism.

Coastweek-- The Severin team seen ready with all smiles to welcome the guests and Skalleagues to a sumptuous meal.

He also urged to look into critical issues like roads, security, infrastructure, garbage collection, electricity cut outs, water and the much talked about by pass to the South Coast.

 In his acceptance as the President for 2013/2014, Mr. Mehboob Harunani thanked all Skalleagues present and all those who had sent their apologies for showing their faith and confidence in him and he assured them of total commitment to taking Skal to even greater heights.

He requested the older members to take part in all the Skal functions regularly as the club needed their guidance.

He then introduced his committee for 2013/2014 to the members and the guests.

President – Mr Mehboob Harunani (Shehnai Restaurant), Vice President – Mr Paul Kurgat (Ashnil Hotels), Secretary – Mrs Rashida Pereira (Fourways Travel), Treasurer – Mr Nitin Pandya (Bamburi Beach Resort).

Committee Members: Mr Victor Shitaka (Tamarind Restaurant), Mr Albert Musando (Bamburi- Lafarge), Mrs Gilian Levitan (Lantana Galu Beach), Donato Fonseca (Marajani Tours-PRO).

The Sponsors Ethiopian Airlines Manager Mr Fasika Berhanu, congratulated the new committee and assured Skal of his company’s support in future.

He informed Skal of their new routes and their direct flying programmes from Mombasa to various destinations around the world.

He told members that Ethiopian Airlines is always ready to be partners in the promotion of tourism at the Coast.

The Chairman for the 2015 bid Mr Tony Clegg Butt informed the members of their final plans of preparing the bid for presentation in the 2013 Cruise Congress in New York.

He assured the members of Skal Kenya Coast that he and his committee were confident of bringing the 2015 Skal International Congress to Mombasa Kenya.

He informed them that the Congress is being marketed as the “Skal Beach Congress 2015” and where he expects between 800 to 1000 Skalleagues from the Travel and Tourism Industry round the Globe to attend.

A lovely light and sound show was prepared by the Severin Sea Lodge which was followed by sumptuous dinner.

The lovely dinner was more based on a Swahili theme and the wide spread buffet was enjoyed by all.

Members truly agreed an evening full of entertainment and good food presented by Severin Sea Lodge. As always lovely raffle prizes were out for grabs.

The biggest one being for members only, was 2 Air tickets to Bangkok kindly donated by Ethiopian Airlines combined with 6 nights in a five star hotel in Bali, Indonesia kindly donated by Skal Club of Bali.

Other raffle prizes were kindly donated by Mswambweni Beach House, Galu Lantana Beach, Sarova’s Salt Lick Lodge, Kaskazi Beach Hotel, Tamarind Dhow, Voyagers Smugglers Cove,Serena’s Fountain Restaurant ,Severins Imani Dhow and Severins Light and Sound Show with dinner at Fort Jesus.

The raffle was very well conducted by the incoming Vice President Mr. Paul Kurgat.

Finally the President Mr. Mehboob Harunani bid farewell to one of the oldest Skalleague who was retiring as the Resident Manager of Private Safaris after 43 years Ms Anna Conte, who was going back home to Switzerland.

Mr. Harunani said this as he declared Anna Conte as the winner of the traditional Skal Rose Bowl in appreciation of her hard work and promotion of tourism during the year 2012/2013.

He thanked all members and the guests for attending the function as well as Ethiopian Airlines and Severin Sea Lodge group and urged Skalleagues to find time in attending the dinners and participate in building SKAL and enjoy doing business based on the basis of Ethics, Friendship and Trust.
