Coastweek - - The Cardiac Support Group, which falls directly under the Aga Khan Hospital, held their unique first ever Healthy Heart Fair and Talk.

The people of Mombasa are very fortunate to have local consultants who gave talks on this day with reference to the theme Healthy Heart Awareness.

The event took place at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Sunday, 27 April 2008 from 5.00 - 9.00 p.m.

The Fair had many things to offer. There were various stalls displaying and selling healthy wares.

Reputable companies from Mombasa as well as Nairobi displayed their products.

These were the very popular Healthy U coming all the way from Nairobi to display their very famous products as well as Bio yoghurt, The Nyali Health Club, Forever Living products and Pwani Oils who were not only displaying their cholesterol free oils but also had healthy sugar and preservative free juices for sale.

The Cardiac Support Group together with dedicated volunteers from the Aga Khan Hospital had set up stalls for the measurements of BMI's and blood pressures as well as blood sugar levels.

There was an excellent dietician on hand to advice the public on the various food choices and healthy food preparations.

This was a very popular and long queues were seen with most people patiently awaiting their turns in order to know if they were over weight or if their blood sugars were high.

The cardiac support group also had fresh fruits for sale.

These were very kindly donated by Khosla Farms and almost all the fruit was sold by the time the fair ended.

There were some lovely heart shaped key chains and other articles for sale and not to forget the madafus' which were enjoyed by all.

The highlights of the evening were the enlightening talks given by Dr. Vinesh Vaghela and Dr. J Maina.

Dr. Vaghela gave an extremely informative and interesting talk on heart diseases and ways in which to prevent getting heart problems.

Dr Maina's talk was on the serious problem of stroke and its relation to high blood pressure and bleeding in the brain leading to stroke and paralysis.

Both speakers were well received by the audience.

The Cardiac Support Group was honoured by presence of Ms Azmina Jamal, Board Member of the Aga khan Hospital at the Healthy heart Fair and her participation in activities of the Cardiac Support group is much appreciated by the committee.

There was a raffle draw after the talk and several fantastic prizes were won.

All of the prizes for the raffle were donated by generous companies and a few individuals to whom the cardiac support group is grateful for their magnanimity and support.

The very  exciting first prize was a night for two at the Satao Camp donated by Southern Cross Safaris.

A reminder to those who have not yet collected their prize vouchers to please do so from the reception of the Laboratory at the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa.

Last but not the least, Neela of Neela's catering had delicious mouth watering food which was healthy to the bargain and was served with a smile by Neela and her team.

Everyone enjoyed the fabulous stir fry and paneer as well as chicken tikkas followed by fresh mango and avocado juice.

All in all a lovely time was had by all together with an opportunity to be better informed and educated about the Heart and the serious problems it can have and how simple changes in lifestyle can prevent these problems.

The Cardiac Support Group is dependant on well wishers and donors for its activities and requests for more support from the community for its future events including the cardiac camp which is usually held at greatly subsidized costs to the public.
