THREE
EXCELLENT MEALS
YUL'S
BEACH BAR - BAMBURI
Coastweek
- - New Year greetings from NOSHER
!
The Christmas season
generally tends to induce trouser tightening and belts moving out a
commensurate notch and so it was for your food correspondent or
"Mr. Blobby" as he is now referred to by Mrs. Nosher.
Over the Yuletide we
rather fittingly enjoyed three meals at Yul's Beach Bar or Aquadrom,
as it is also known.
Why so many visits ?
Well I recall arriving
in Mombasa many moons ago and asking where one could have a decent
meal on the beach.
Answer came there one:
Yul's.
Surely I said, there
must be more than one good restaurant on the beach ?
But no, I am now a
disciple of the perceived wisdom that Yul's is No. 1 in the sun.
Following his normal
summer months closure, Yul has returned with a vengeance and with a
new and larger menu.
The restaurant is more
comfortable with "Ramboo" furniture and he has launched a
whole range of heart stopping ice creams.
But to get down to
specifics, what did we enjoy ?
Well all of it really.
For those pretending to
be healthy there is a good range of salads and the Chef's Special is a
complete meal in itself.
For the children the
fish goujons and chicken nuggets always hit the spot from the starters
section and the mushrooms in dill sauce are the particular favourite
of Mrs. Nosher.
Yul is of course rightly
famous for his pizzas all of which are unfailingly good, crispy and
fast.
And if anyone can tell
me how the "Namenlos" got its name I'll give them a coconut.
But then again the
boneless chicken tikka with Nan has become a virtual Sunday lunch
staple with us.
And on those days when
all you really want is a huge dose of all things naughty the
cheeseburger and chips is a dream.
This is particularly
effective if someone has persuaded you to drink more grappa or tequila
than is normally considered necessary the previous night.
Then again Yul can turn
out a very restorative 'Bloody Mary' when in need.
Try the deep fried
calamari if you want to sample a fresh delight (by the way did you
hear of the man in the Chinese restaurant who said to the waiter:
"this squid is rubbery", and the waiter replied: "thank
you very much").
I digress.
But for me one of Yul's
most consistently excellent dishes is the peppered steak.
Indeed consistency is
the secret of Yul's success.
Any regulars at the
restaurant will know that Yul and his wife are there seemingly 24/ 7
keeping an eagle eye on both patrons and the excellent and attentive
service brigade.
And so to finish, if you
stinted on the mains go right to the ice cream display cabinet and
indulge yourself; there is a goldmine, a cornucopia indeed a veritable
plethora of flavours almost literally to die for.
Eat it there or take it
away, but do try it and then top the whole thing off with a
cappuccino, gaze out to the Indian Ocean and if you are not tempted to
turn your hand at jet ski antics, just sit back and let your belt out
another notch.
